The Brother 2 Brother Program is a three-phase program to help men that as a result of many factors in their lives have found themselves homeless. Most of our society, if they think about the problem of homelessness, would say the answer is to get a job. What we have found at the Brother 2 Brother program is that every man that walks through the doors of the Jefferson House as a resident has had jobs. Jobs are not the whole answer. Many of the men that are and have been residents at the Jefferson House have been very successful in their lives. The temptations and lack of life training in a country that has a 70% divorce rate, moral corruption in our schools, media, and institutions all leads to what we are seeing today. Men with no moral compass or work ethic, in a world that is moving ever faster and faster.
There is a magazine called Fast Company that I believe has captured the “rallying call” of our society in its tag line: “Faster and faster until the speed of life overcomes the fear of death”. The requirements of education and life skills necessary to succeed in this environment are overwhelming. We believe that the building blocks of a successful life begin with a foundation in Christ Jesus. From there all things are possible. The men spend their first sixty (60) days in-house attending Bible study, devotionals, Christian book studies, Church services and quiet time to contemplate and develop the greatest relationship in their life. A relationship with the most-high God and His son Jesus Christ. A solid foundation and reduced speed zone.
The second phase which is sixty (60) days is spent developing life skills and work ethic upon the foundation of Christ. In-house businesses, community service, personal finance, Jobs for Life classes, anger management, Boundaries classes, resume writing and others help the men to develop the life skills and work ethic necessary to succeed. This phase allows the staff and instructors an opportunity to assess the areas of strength and needed improvement for each man in his skill sets for success. The second phase opens opportunities for the men to understand their areas of interests, talents, and gifts so that they can direct their energies towards areas that have the best indication of success for them.
The third phase which is sixty (60) days the men take the foundation and skills they have developed and apply them in the world. Job search, resume writing, interviewing skills, as well as dressing for success and proper grooming are put into practice. Once jobs are secured, follow-up with the employers and support for the men in applying good work habits and planning are provided. Finally, the men are encouraged to apply the personal finance skills they learned to plan, save and acquire the basic needs of life in our society. Taking responsibility for and cleaning up the wreckage of the past as well as transportation, clothing, health services, food, and housing are addressed. At the end of this phase the goal is that the men may graduate from the Brother 2 Brother Program and be productive members of our society. We believe that the fellowship, support group and accomplishment of a common goal by the men at the Jefferson House establishes a bond that can last the rest of their lives.
To achieve at the Jefferson House and the Brother 2 Brother Program you must want to make a life change. You must be committed to doing whatever it takes to turn your life around. It is the beginning of a journey that can lead you where the Lord meant for you to be. The Lord loves you and has a plan for your life bigger than you have imagined. It’s time to imagine bigger. Welcome home. The future looks brighter from here.
Bless you,
